Paul Huntingford was ill for the twenty-five years following the presentation of schizophrenia when he was twenty-five. He was an only child. After he finished school he found work as a music teacher.

For the next sixteen years he was managed in the community. He played the organ for his local Catholic church. He never completely ackowledged his illness blaming his troubles on other people. That made it difficult to keep him engaged with treatment plans. When ill he was deluded about them. He lost jobs because of his illness .

Five times he was admitted on Mental Health Act Orders. Relapse usually occurred when he stopped medication.

Side-effects were a nuisance. He developed diabetes.During illness he was once violent towards his father, and once later, early after he returned home to live, chased his mother with a knife. Aged thirty-nine he had returned to live with his mother after his father died.

During the three months before the event he took no medication and had no connection with the mental health services. The community nurse service had taken him off their list and the Consultant had written him over to the family doctor.

His mother died during his attempt at exorcism.
